Adult Swim joined Comic-Con@Home and its virtual livestream conference to share some new announcements, including a new Rick and Morty anime short directed by Tower of God director Takashi Sano. The new short, “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider,” was featured during Toonami‘s lineup of upcoming shows and follows the surprise debut of a samurai-influenced short earlier this year.
The episode deals with time paradoxes and is much more detailed in its storytelling than the first short was. The duo must face a mysterious cabal of murderous Mortys that turns into a full blowout battle in Tokyo complete with an anime-style plot twist that tugs on the emotions. It also features Rick being oddly heroic, a far cry from his usual narcissistic ways. However, the story still fits perfectly within the multiverse setting the main series has already introduced to audiences.
The episode was produced by Sola Entertainment and animated at Telecom Animation Film, the same studio that helped animate Akira and Batman: The Animated Series. Rick and Morty is currently between seasons, with the fifth and sixth seasons between various stages of completion during the quarantine. According to a San Diego Comic-Con panel appearance by creator Dan Harmon, the fifth season is currently being animated, while the sixth is in the writing stages. The team also featured a first look at the upcoming fifth season during that same panel.
Although there is currently no release date for the next season of Rick and Morty, check out the short above, then check out the new Simon Pegg and Nick frost series announced during Comic-Con.
