Newton High’s Cardinal baseball team came back to tieWednesday’s first game of a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader.
Down 2-1 to visiting Indianola, the Cardinals produced a run in the fourth for a 2-2 tie.
The Indians got single runs in the fifth and sixth to go up 4-2. They came up with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Newton wasn’t done yet. The Cardinals got a one-out rally to score three runs but they were stopped short of a full comeback.
“Our kids never give up and I’m proud of how hard they fight,” Newton head coach Dustin Brisel said.
Newton dropped the 7-5 decision in the opener and lost 11-1 to Indianola in the second game at Woodland Park. The Cardinals are 1-10 against LHC teams and 1-11 overall.
“They just hit the cover off the ball right off the bat in the second game,” Brisel said. “Indianola is a good team and we knew they hit the ball well.”
Newton gets an off-day on Thursday. Brisel said it allows the Cardinals to regroup and work on things in practice.
The Cardinals play at Class 3A No. 2 Dallas Center-Grimes on Friday. It is a junior varsity-varsity doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m.
Newton hosts Knoxville for only its second non-conference game of the season on Monday. The junior varsity is at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
On Tuesday the Cardinals travel to Grinnell for a LHC varsity doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. Those games will conclude conference action for Newton.
In Wednesday’s opener, Newton’s Drew Thompson singled to open the third inning. Gatlin Chambers had a sacrifice bunt then Brody Bauer reached on a dropped third strike.
Thompson scored on a passed ball to make it 2-1. Newton used a one-out walk to Dalton Altemeier to start a scoring threat in the fourth.
Gage Gomez doubled. Blake Sevenbergen’s RBI single tied the game a 2-all.
The Cardinals faced a 7-2 deficit going into the seventh.Thompson beat out an infield hit for a one-out single. Two passed balls allowed Thompson to advance to third base.
Bauer walked then Braydon Chance doubled to center field to drive in two runs. Alex Thomason went in to run for Chance. Derek Lanser drove in the final run with a base hit.
Thompson had two singles and Chance doubled as did Gomez. Lanser and Sevenbergen each had a single.
Chambers went 4 1/3 innings as the starter and took the loss. Cole Swank pitched 2 2/3 innings.
Indianola scored six runs in the first inning of the second game on its way to an 11-1 win in five innings. It had 11 hits including three doubles and a triple.
Newton scored its run in the second. The Cardinals were down 7-0 at the time.
Swank singled and Thomason went in to run for him. Bauer and Chambers drew walks. Thomason was out on a fielder’s choice at home but Bauer scored on a throw by the Indians.
Chance had a double in the game. Lanser and Swank each had a single.
Newton used four pitchers starting with Riley Mouchka. Tade Vanderlaan, Kacey Sommars and Conner Brain also threw from the mound. Mouchka took the loss.
“Our pitching and defense are better. When we throw strikes and play clean baseball, we’re in the games,” Brisel said. “We’re starting to find some holes with the bats.
“We’re going in the right direction”.
