Ever since the integration of cameras into smartphones, shooting video in a vertical orientation has been a controversial topic. Whether you’re a cinematography expert or a casual vlogger, there’s no doubt you’ve had discussions on whether video-recording in a vertical aspect ratio is acceptable or not. Now, settling the argument once and for all, Academy Award-winning director Damien Chazelle — whose previous works include Whiplash and La La Land — has teamed up with Apple to create a short film completely shot in vertical, with an iPhone 11 Pro.
Named The Stunt Double, this piece of “Vertical Cinema” takes viewers on a journey through a variety of different Hollywood genres over the ages, reinterpreted with a completely new orientation. Apple describes the nine-minute piece: “A journey through cinema history is reimagined for the vertical screen in Damien Chazelle’s “The Stunt Double,” a short film Shot on iPhone 11 Pro. Watch as classic genres are flipped on their side, from action movies to silent films, spy flicks to westerns, reframing and modernizing the movie magic we know and love.”
Aside from the short film itself, Apple also created a behind-the-scenes video showcasing Damien Chazelle’s work on making The Stunt Double. It also features other massive film creators including the BAFTA-winning production designer Shane Valentino, Academy Award-winning cinematographer Linus Sandgren, and costume designer April Napier.
