Game 1 comeback bid comes up short - Official site of the Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning did not get off to a strong start in Game 1 of their Second Round series against the Bruins.

Tampa Bay lost the special teams battle and ran into strong goaltending from Jaroslav Halak as the Bruins grabbed Game 1, 3-1.

The Bolts started slowly and trailed 1-0 through 20 minutes.

Boston had the majority of the scoring chances in the opening period. David Pastrnak rang two shots off the post and Ondrej Kase had a chance on a breakaway that Andrei Vasilevskiy managed to fight off. The Bruins finally broke through late in the period on a Charlie Coyle deflection. Brandon Carlo's point shot appeared to be going wide but Coyle was wide open to Vasilevskiy's left and managed to redirect the puck back on net.

Pastrnak gave the Bruins a 2-0 advantage early in the second period with a power play goal. Boston won the faceoff and held play in the Lightning zone for the first three quarters of the power play. Finally they took advantage of the tired group of Lightning penalty killers and found Pastrnak open for a one-timer at the left circle that Vasilevskiy couldn't manage to stop.

Following Pastrnak's goal, the Lightning did settle in and found their offensive game. Tampa Bay outshot Boston 18-7 in the middle frame but Halak shut down everything thrown his way.

Another goal early in a period proved to be the game-winner for the Bruins. Tampa Bay had the deficit grow to three on a goal from Brad Marchand 1:17 into the third. Ryan McDonagh had the puck stripped on his way out of the zone and Pastrnak fed Marchand wide open in front of the Lightning net for the goal.

Tampa Bay attempted to mount a comeback from there. Victor Hedman bagged a pair of goals that both came about in similar ways. Midway through the period, Hedman fired a soft wrister that deflected off Charlie McAvoy and past Halak to get the Bolts on the board. Hedman then got the Lightning within one late in the third with another point shot that clipped McAvoy on its way into the net.

That would be as close as Tampa Bay would get, however, as the Bruins kept the Bolts from getting set up in the final minute following Hedman's second goal.

The power play continues to be a sore spot for the Lightning in the postseason. After being held without a PPG in Round 1, the Lightning were once again shut out in three opportunities on Sunday. At times the Lightning penalty kill looked strong but they were thoroughly dominated on the kill that led to Pastrnak's goal.

Halak was solid in net for Boston, finishing the night with 35 saves and only allowed the two goals off deflections from his own defender.

The Bolts will be back in action in Game 2 on Tuesday night.
