HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (7-9, 0-3 C-USA) overcame a 10-point first-half deficit, but came up short, 69-65, against the North Texas Mean Green (10-4, 3-1 C-USA) on Saturday night in the Cam Henderson Center.
"I don't even know what to say, we just got to get better. That's all," Marshall men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the defeat. "You have to hit shots. When there are fewer possessions mistakes are critical."
Junior Taevion Kinsey led the team with 29 points, five rebounds and five assists. The native of Columbus, Ohio, made 10 of his 19 attempts from the field and went 8-for-9 from the charity stripe.
Senior Darius George followed with 18 points on a 7-of-9 shooting night to go with three steals to lead the Herd.
The Mean Green's Abou Ousmane and Thomas Bell each recorded a double-double. Ousmane scored 22 points and collected 11 rebounds as Bell snagged 12 boards to go with 10 points.
Despite being down by as many as 10 points in the first and trailing 35-27 at the break, Marshall was not ready to give up. It came out of the gates on an 8-2 run. George and Kinsey each contributed four points as MU was down 40-32 six minutes into the final stanza.
After the two sides traded runs, an Andrew Taylor three-point basket jump started a 10-1 Thundering Herd advantage. The run saw MU gain its first lead of the contest, 48-44, with 10:51 on the clock.
After a couple of 4-0 runs by the visiting Mean Green, Marshall trailed by five, 65-60, with 1:39 remaining on the clock.
Nine seconds later, Kinsey drained a three on an assist by Taylor. Then the Herd defense forced a North Texas turnover and Kinsey tied the game, 65-65, with just 61 ticks left on the scoreboard.
Mean Green guard Tylor Perry answered with a jumper at the other end 22 seconds later to put the visitors up 67-65. On the offensive end for Marshall, Kinsey took a jumper, but the attempt was blocked by Bell. Perry was immediately fouled with 16 seconds left and made a pair of free throws as MU fell.
NOTES
Kinsey reached double-figure scoring for the 50th consecutive outing and recorded his 11th game of 20 or more points this season.
The Herd made a three in its 986th consecutive game, with the last contest without a triple occurring on Feb. 27, 1989, in a win over App State.
Senior Darius George played in his 127th career game. Passing Jarrod West (2017-21), Jannson Williams (2016-21) and Daryl Merthie (2006-10) to take sole possession of fifth in games played in program history.
Kinsey has played all 40 minutes in six of the last seven games. He now has 633 made field goals in career, ninth most in program history.
