WBB: Hofstra's Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short In Loss To William & Mary - The official website of Hofstra University Athletics

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra rallied in the fourth quarter but could not overcome an 18-point deficit in a 56-48 Colonial Athletic Association loss to William & Mary Friday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Pride got as close as six points in the final 30 seconds of the game and outscored the Tribe, 16-8, in the fourth quarter.

Hofstra slipped to 3-9 on the season and 0-4 in the CAA. William & Mary improved to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in league play, and snapped a three game losing skid with the win.

Jahsyni Knight led Hofstra with a season-high 14 points. Jaylen Hines scored nine points, and added 11 rebounds and a career-best five steals.   

William & Mary's Riley Casey scored the first seven points of the game as the Tribe held the Pride scoreless for the first 5:01. Selma Markisic and Hines scored back-to-back baskets for the Pride as Hofstra cut its deficit to four with 4:12 on the clock. Following the media timeout, Knight went coast-to-coast after a steal to make it a 6-0 run. The Tribe would go back up by five, 13-8, with 2:12 to go but Hofstra scored the final four points, on a three from Hines and a free throw from Knight, to trail by one, 13-12, at the end of the first quarter.

Hofstra would take its first lead of the game on the opening possession of the second quarter as Jaala Henry converted a layup attempt. Hofstra would go up by seven, 20-13, following a Rosi Nicholson basket with 5:54 to go that prompted William & Mary to call a timeout. The Tribe came out of the timeout and scored their first points of the quarter to start an 18-0 run that gave the visitors a 31-20 lead with 28 second to play in the quarter. After Hines snapped the Pride's scoreless drought with a jumper with 19 seconds to go, the Tribe's Kate Sramac hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to send William & Mary into the locker room with a 34-22 lead.  

Bre Bellamy scored the first four points of the third quarter as William & Mary went up by 16, 38-22, with 8:59 to go. The Pride would score four unanswered points on layups from Markisic and Caria Reynolds to cut the deficit to 12, 38-26, with 4:16 remaining. Hofstra would pull within 11, 43-32, on a Jada Peacock three-pointer but Casey hit her fifth three-pointer of the game on the Tribe's next possession to push the lead back to 14 with 1:39 remaining. William & Mary would hold a 16-point lead, 48-32, after 30 minutes.

Trailing by 18 in the fourth quarter, Hofstra got five straight points from Reynolds to make it a 52-39 contest with 6:28 to play. Knight would follow a William & Mary basket with five consecutive points to get the Pride within 10, 54-44, with 4:05 to play. Henry would make it a single-digit deficit for the Pride as he layup with 1:10 to play made it 54-46. The Pride forced a turnover on the Tribe's ensuing possession but could not score. The Pride did get as close as six points with 23 seconds to play but William & Mary hit a pair of free throws with 21 seconds to go and posted the eight-point victory.

Casey led all scorers with 20 points and added five assists and three steals. Sydney Wagner had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Bellamy finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

- Hofstra is 30-17-1 all-time versus William & Mary.
- The Pride was playing their first home game since December 11, a span of 41 days.
- Reynolds and Peacock finished with seven points each.
- The Pride finished with a 36-34 rebounding advantage.
