SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Union College women's basketball team came up just short on Saturday afternoon at Skidmore College, falling to the host Thoroughbreds by a 57-52 score.

Senior Amber Raisner led all players with 19 points and also hauled in eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Classmate Darby Leid and junior Olivia Pachla added eight points apiece, while senior Laura Vinton and junior Megan Lee collected nine and eight rebounds, respectively.

The Dutchwomen came out of the gates cold, missing their first seven shots as Skidmore jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 4:24 gone by in the first quarter. Sophomore Kennedy Clark finally got Union on the board by sinking a layup with 5:23 on the clock, starting an 8-2 run that evened the score at eight following a layup by junior Kendall Degenhardt. The home team held a 13-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Skidmore started the second period with a 10-2 run to take a 23-12 lead with 2:25 elapsed, but Union followed up soon after with a 9-2 run to get back into the contest. Pachla scored two buckets and assisted on two from Raisner during the run. Union trailed by six (34-28) at the half, shooting 37.0 percent (10 of 27) from the field to Skidmore's 44.4 percent (12 of 27).

The Dutchwomen scored 10 of the third quarter's first 12 points to take their first lead of the game at 38-36, but the Thoroughbreds responded with eight straight before a Vinton layup in the final seconds made the score 44-40 in favor of the home team.

Union again started strong in the fourth frame, getting three points each from Raisner and senior Anna Metcalf as part of a 7-2 run that put Union back up 47-46 with 7:03 on the clock. But the visitors managed only one point over the next 4:51, allowing the home team to take a 51-48 lead. The deficit was still three when Raisner hit a layup to make the score 53-52 with 17 seconds left, but Skidmore hit their free throws and Union's last two shot attempts came up empty.

Both teams shot under 35 percent for the game, with Union's 18-of-53 shooting (34.0 percent) just edging out Skidmore's 18-of-54 (33.3 percent) effort. The Thoroughbreds hit one more three-pointer and also hit four more free throws to account for the final differential.

Union will finally return home on Tuesday, when the Dutchwomen begin a busy two-week stretch with a matchup against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Viniar Athletic Center.
