With the launch of a Short-Term Rental webpage, the City of Fort Worth is looking forward to hearing feedback from residents at two upcoming engagement opportunities.

The meeting will last until all speakers have had a chance to speak. Speaker signup begins in-person at 4:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall, second floor, 200 Texas St. Speaker signup closes at 6 p.m.

Thursday, July 28, 6 p.m.

Virtual and televised public meeting. During this televised program, a panel from the City will answer questions on how the City will address short-term rentals. Participants can submit questions using email, phone and text. The text and phone numbers will be displayed on the screen during the meeting.

The meeting will be available to view live, then recorded on the City website and YouTube.

An additional tool used to collect feedback involves the use of the engagement platform ThoughtExchange. In their own words, respondents can answer the question, “What are your thoughts or concerns as the Council looks to address short-term rentals?” Participants may also rank the thoughts of others.

Residents always have an opportunity to be present at City Council meetings and provide public comments. Sign up to speak at a meeting.

What has taken place so far?

An STR, sometimes referred to as a “vacation rental,” is a residential property available for rent for guest lodging for a period ranging from one to 29 days. STRs exist in residential districts in Fort Worth, where they are not allowed.

Last week, Fort Worth launched a webpage that provides resources and ways to provide feedback related to STRs.

Earlier this summer, City staff selected Deckard Technologies Inc. to identify short-term rentals currently operating in the city. A final report is expected in the coming weeks and will be posted to the website. Additionally, the City has issued a request for proposals regarding a registration platform for STRs, hotels and other lodging. City Council will receive a briefing in mid-August to provide updates on the report and the public input on STRs.

Going forward, the City may consider addressing the issue after reviewing the collected data and consulting with neighborhood associations, residents and property owners.

What are the City's goals related to this process?

  • Preserve residential quality of neighborhoods and protect from commercial lodging encroachment.
  • Ensure the health and safety of guests and residents.
  • Support tourism in a balanced way.
  • Preserve residential housing supply.
  • Collect Hotel Occupancy Tax from STRs.
  • Minimize impact on staff and recover costs for code enforcement.
