Why Celebs Are Flocking To This Brooklyn-Based Glass Jewelry Label - Grazia

Chunky, colorful jewelry is having a moment, and it’s not-so-quietly gaining more traction than the delicate gold designs that covered our vanities in 2020. In Marie Kondo’s terms, the maximalist trend is a joy-sparker, loved by celebrities like Bella and Gigi Hadid, Kylie Jenner, and Hailey Bieber. As seen numerous times on social media, these stars—among others—have recently been flocking to KEANE, a four-year-old Brooklyn-based label specializing in hand-blown glass accessories and decor. At the very least, you’ve likely come across the brand’s pastel rings, which the founder classifies as the longest-standing bestsellers.

KEANE founder Colin Lynch has an extensive background in glassblowing. “I moved to New York in 2008 after graduating from RISD to work as a studio assistant for a Brooklyn-based sculptor,” Lynch says in a statement provided to GRAZIA. “Fortunately, and unfortunately, this came on the heels of the economic crash, so just a bit under a year later, I was let go and ended up finding a job working for a fashion retailer. It was there I learned more about the industry and eventually was able to use the shops as testing grounds for the earliest designs. The motivation to start the line came from a desire to get back into the studio and start making again. I wanted to find a way to wed all my disparate experiences, and jewelry was that medium.”

The designer’s new Spring-Summer 2021 collection evokes positivity, something we could all use a hearty dose of amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. “We wanted to try and shift the focus away from all the negative in the world and revisit things, places, and times that provide hope, optimism, or just allow a path to escape for a moment. We drew inspiration from the 60s/70s psychedelic revolution (think flower power) as well as traditional Japanese sweets called Wagashi.” He continues, “Our hope was to draw on some of the cultural similarities to that time in history, borrowing from the floral design aesthetic both domestically and abroad and wedding this with the simple beauty of Wagashi. To reinforce the theme of the psychedelic revolution, we chose a range of bright, fluorescent hues symbolic of the period as well as colors that change based on the light they’re exposed to.”
