TROY, N.Y. - The Union College softball team made the trip to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday to face off against the Engineers. The Dutchwomen fell to RPI in both games, losing the first 8-0 (5 innings), but coming closer in the second game falling by a 4-3 score.

Game 1: RPI 8, Union 0

Neither team scored a run over the first three innings, before RPI took full advantage of a two-out error to score six unearned runs in the fourth that provided all the runs needed to win.

RPI returned to bat and plated two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, then added one last run at the bottom of the sixth to end the game early.

Union struggled to find offense against Alexis Cooke (2-0), managing only four hits in six innings. Sophomore Amanda Granato (1-7) did not allow an earned run in her 3.2 innings, but still conceded six runs on five hits to suffer the loss.

Game 2: Union 3, RPI 4

Senior Makayla Koehler bounced back from a difficult first inning to keep Union close in game two, but RPI broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with a win and a sweep.

RPI took an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first, doubling to right field to earn their first run, executing a double steal to earn their second, and singling home their third.

But Union held their ground at the top of the second, as sophomore Karson Saunders homered to left field, driving home Koehler and sophomore Hannah Mitchell to tie the game.

Koehler limited the Engineers' offense for the next five innings, stranding four runners on base to keep the game knotted at three. But RPI broke through again in the bottom of the seventh, as Steph Cavallero looped a single to left field with the bases loaded to end the game.

Koehler (1-6) took the loss for Union, allowing four runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings. Brooke Sroczinski (1-1) allowed three runs on nine hits to earn the win for RPI.

The Dutchwomen and Engineers will play two games again tomorrow at Alexander Field beginning at 3pm.
