FORT MYERS, Fla. --- A ninth-inning rally fell just short as the FGCU baseball team (22-13, 8-3 ASUN) lost 4-2 to conference rival Stetson (21-14, 7-4) inside Swanson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the weekend series is now tied, and the all-time series between the Eagles and the Hatters is knotted at 22 apiece. The two teams will meet on Sunday at 1 p.m. as FGCU can claim the first series win over its conference rival since 2016 with a victory. The Green and Blue also remain one game ahead of Stetson and UNF in the ASUN's South Division standings heading into the weekend finale.
"Our team showed some grit battling to the very end, but it wasn't enough," FGCU head coach Dave Tollett said. "We'll head back out there tomorrow and look to secure the series."
Offensively, FGCU received multi-hit efforts from Alejandro Figueredo (2-for-4, solo HR) and Johnny Long (2-for-4) while four others also picked up one hit apiece, including Stephen Wilmer, who extended his hitting streak to 10 straight with a sixth-inning single.
FGCU nearly took an early lead in the first inning as back-to-back Eagles reached with one out, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat. Then, after falling behind 4-0, the Green and Blue had rallies in the sixth and ninth innings but couldn't produce the key hit.
In the sixth, Figueredo (Sucre, Venezuela/West Oak HS/Seminole State) blasted a solo shot to dead center with two outs for his third home run of the season. Wilmer (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview HS/Pasco-Hernando State) and Marc Coffers then had back-to-back singles, but a potential game-tying three-run home run from Cameron Krzeminski was caught on the warning track.
The Eagles then used a single and three hit batters in the ninth to push across a run, but Stetson's Jovan Gill closed the door by coming to produce a strikeout for the final out with the bases loaded.
On the mound, Tyler Tipton (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season as the righty allowed six hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks with four strikeouts over four-plus innings. Tyler Shuck tossed 4.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit, one unearned run and two walks with three strikeouts. Mason Miller got the final out in the top half of the ninth.
The Green and Blue, who are now 9-3 in the month of April, outhit Stetson 8-7 but stranded 10 men on base with nine strikeouts.
