PHILADELPHIA – The Dragons recorded two early goals in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Villanova University. Drexel drops to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in conference play before heading into a CAA heavy weekend.
The Wildcats put the first score on the board in the seventh minute, but the Dragons offense answered back shortly after. Drexel pressured Villanova's defense from the start, forcing five penalty corners in the first quarter alone. The Dragons struggled to find the back of the net on each opportunity but a strong unassisted effort from Shannon Tringola tied the game at one before the buzzer.
Eager to take the lead, Drexel continued to push right from the start of the second. A minute and a half in, the Dragons earned a stroke opportunity and sent Liz Chipman to the line. Chipman's one vs one effort was successful, giving DU a 2-1 lead. Villanova sank back-to-back goals in the following five minutes, taking a 3-2 lead at intermission.
Both defenses were resilient in their efforts in the second half as each team was held scoreless through the final two quarters.
Megan Hadfield stopped seven shots while facing a Wildcats offense that produced 11 penalty corners and 18 total shots.
The Dragons are on the road next weekend for a pair of conference matchups between Northeastern and Hofstra.
