Ring thing
Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker are planning forever together. On Oct. 17, the blink-182 drummer got down on one knee and proposed on the beach in front of the Rosewood Miramar hotel in Montecito, California. She said yes. The proposal was beautiful, as Kardashian family florist Jeff Leatham set up thousands of red roses on the sand in the shape of a giant heart beforehand (clearly he conspired with Travis). The bride-to-be posted photos from the proposal on Instagram, captioning them simply, "forever." The ring, an oval sparkler from Lorraine Schwartz, is estimated to be worth $500,000 to $1 million. Kourtney's ex Scott Disick supposedly needs time to "process" the engagement.

The birds and the bees
TMI? Gwyneth Paltrow has never been one to shy away from intimate talk (have you seen some of the things she sells on Goop?), and she's now opening up about the sex advice she gives her teenage children, Apple Martin, 17, and Moses Martin, 15. "I try always to be neutral on the topic. I think my generation, we got a lot of messages around sex that made us feel bad about it," said Gwyneth, who has a new Netflix series called "Sex, Love & goop." The "Iron Man" actress conveyed that she tries to follow her children's lead while acknowledging no teen wants to actually have intimate chats with their parents. Her advice: "I think the main thing that nobody ever tells you, is you have to stay really close to your own truth and you have to stay really in integrity with that truth," she explained. "Because when you are in a relationship and you are not being your full self, you are sublimating things or you are white knuckling through something, and I think it can be pretty damaging to how you feel about yourself." Gwyneth added, "I will always just encourage my children to really listen to themselves, listen to their instincts, listen if something feels right, and to act from that place."

Secret dates
Kristin Cavallari secretly went "on a couple dates" with ex Jay Cutler after filing for divorce, she revealed on the Oct. 19 episode of Kaitlyn Bristowe's "Off the Vine" podcast. "I have to say, it's been such a roller coaster, but it's been the brightest and the saddest, the whole experience," she said of her decision to end her marriage to the former NFL player. "Jay and I actually went on a couple dates, like, months and months and months ago, but we did." On those dates, she realized the connection "wasn't there anymore." She continued to delve into her marriage, dubbing it "toxic." "The thing with Jay and I is we aren't getting a divorce because of love lost, which made it really challenging because we were crazy about each other," the "Very Cavallari" star said. "And so I just decided I didn't want to be in a toxic relationship anymore and I had to break it off. But that's made it hard and made me sit here and question it for a few months. But then going back and dating him a little bit made me reaffirm, like, 'No, I know that I'm doing the right decision.'"

Colin Powell, the first Black U.S. secretary of state, passed away on Oct. 18, 2021, due to COVID-19 complications. He was 84. The former four-star general was fully vaccinated but also suffered from multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells that suppresses the body's immune response, his longtime chief of staff, Peggy Cifrino, confirmed to CNN, adding that the leader "also had Parkinson's, which put him at high risk with an immuno compromised system." Following his death, tributes poured in from celebrities and politicians, including several former presidents.
Medical issue
Celine Dion's return to the Las Vegas stage is going to have to wait. The singer, who spent 16 years performing at Caesars Palace, was set to begin a new residency show at the newly opened Resorts World on Nov. 5, but she's having to delay that due to health issues. A press release said Celine has been experiencing "severe and persistent muscle spasms" that prevent her from performing. "I'm heartbroken by this," Celine said. "My team and I have been working on our new show for the past eight months, and to not be able to open this November saddens me beyond words. My partners at Resorts World Las Vegas and AEG have been working around the clock to get this brand-new state-of-the-art theatre ready, and it's absolutely beautiful. I feel so bad that I'm letting them down, and I'm especially sorry for disappointing all the fans who've been making their plans to come to Las Vegas. Now, I have to focus on getting better… I want to get through this as soon as I can."
Name game
Hear Ye, hear Ye, Kanye West has a new a name. On Oct. 18, TMZ reported that a judge has OK'd the rapper's request to legally change his name from Kanye Omari West to Ye. Yep, two letters. Kanye, er, Ye, will no longer have a middle or last name. The rapper's estranged wife, Kim Kardashian West, has previously said she intends to keep her married name, primarily for the sake of their four children who use the West surname. Fans, of course, have called Kanye "Ye" for years. It seems that he's been planning this for a while, as he first tweeted in 2018, "The being formally known as Kanye West. I am YE."
Early morning stabbing
"Survivor: Fiji" contestant Michelle Yi was beaten and stabbed by a homeless woman in Santa Monica, California, while preparing for an early morning Pilates class on Oct. 18. The "Survivor" fan favorite was hit in the head with a baton and stabbed in the bicep, People magazine reported. She received stitches at the hospital; no bones were broken during the assault. Michelle said her attacker was "yelling all sorts of things like, 'You stole my identity' and 'You're a prostitute.'" Rather than leaving as Michelle instructed the attacker to do, the woman lunged at reality star with a knife in one hand and a metal baton in the other. The woman, who attacked two other people that same morning, was arrested.
Cheating allegations
Lala Kent reportedly split with her fiancé, producer Randall Emmett, amid cheating allegations. Breakup rumors began swirling on Oct. 17 after pictures surfaced on social media that appeared to show Randall with two women at a Nashville hotel. Lala then liked a social media post that alluded to Randall cheating on her. Later that day, fans of the "Vanderpump Rules" star also noticed that Randall was suddenly absent from her Instagram feed. At the same time, she began vaguely hinting at a breakup with posts and videos. "Randall always lives a double life," a source told Page Six on Oct. 18 after it reported the duo had split. "He lives the life of a husband or boyfriend, and then he lives the life of a serial partier and then goes on a bender." Interestingly, on Oct. 19, TMZ reported that Lala and Randall were trying to work things out, but she didn't utter a word when asked by a camera crew about the status of the relationship. At the time, Lala wasn't wearing her engagement ring.
Cause of death revealed
1980s video vixen and actress Tawny Kitaen died from heart disease, the Orange County coroner announced on Oct. 20. Tawny, who notably starred in several Whitesnake music videos — she was also briefly married to the band's frontman, David Coverdale — passed away at her home in Newport Beach, California, on May 7, but the coroner only recently revealed her cause of death. TMZ reported that the actress, who was 59, died from dilated cardiomyopathy, the most common type of heart disease. Other contributing factors included clogged arteries. Antidepressants, sedatives, Tylenol, nerve pain medication and opioids were also found in her system. In addition to her music video roles, she also starred opposite Tom Hanks in the 1984 film "Bachelor Party," and she appeared on "The Surreal Life," "Botched" and VH1's "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew."
Housewife-to-be
He put a ring on it. After more than a year of dating, Teresa Giudice and Luis "Louie" Ruelas are engaged. People magazine reported that Luis popped the question while on a romantic vacation in Greece at the Amanzoe Resort in Porto Heli on Oct. 19. The magical proposal included sparklers, candles, roses, a violinist and a fireworks display. Former "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Dina Manzo and her husband, Dave Cantin, were also there for the big moment. "It was absolutely exquisite," a source told People. "The choreographed fireworks display illuminated a 'Marry Me' sign as Louie got down on one knee. Teresa was completely surprised."
On-set tragedy
On Oct. 21 on the New Mexico set of the indie Western "Rust," cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, died and director Joel Souza, 48, was wounded after they were "shot when a prop firearm was discharged" by the film's star, Alec Baldwin, on location at the Bonanza Creek Ranch outside Santa Fe, authorities confirmed. No one has been arrested and no charges have been filed, but the incident remains an "open and active" investigation. A reporter and photographer for the Santa Fe New Mexican saw Alec, who was questioned by law enforcement, in tears after the tragedy. Halyna, a native of Ukraine who previously worked as an investigative journalist in Europe before moving into the film industry, was transported by helicopter to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she passed away, the local sheriff's office confirmed. The director was taken by ambulance to another hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released.
