MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University women's soccer team held the edge in shots, but Northwest Nazarene was able to tally a couple of early goals and hold off a big push by the Wolves in the second half to claim the 2-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory on a rainy Thursday at the WOU Soccer Field.

Shots were close at the half and then WOU (4-7-2, 3-4-2 GNAC) ended up outshooting NNU (7-3-2, 5-3-1 GNAC) by four in the second half and 16-11 overall in the match. The Wolves had more on goal, landing seven on target to five for the Nighthawks.

With rain looming all afternoon, it held off until the second half when the teams played through a pretty steady rain.

There were no corner kicks until the second half with NNU holding a 4-2 edge. There were 22 fouls whistled in the game, with 12 called on the Nighthawks.

The Wolves kept a pretty consistent lineup throughout the game with Jenna Efraimson, Liz Parker, Piper Matson, Hannah Rispler, Jada Foster, Chloe Smith and Darien Walton playing all 90 minutes. Off the bench, Haley King played the most minutes with 72. Lilly Nowatzke led the team in shots with four, landing two on goal. Gabby Pulliam tallied three shots with one on goal and Efraimson, Matson and Smith all recorded two shots. Walton played all 90 minutes in goal, coming away with three saves as she was making her first start since Sep. 25 at Western Washington.

WOU had an early chance in the first minute that came off of a foul just outside the box. Smith took the free kick and put a shot near the top of the goal that was saved by Alexis Montoya.

After that, the Nighthawks were generating a few chances as Walton came up with a save in the fifth minute before the next run by NNU turned into a goal. Sierra Sanchez was able to get loose on the left side of the box and sent a shot to the upper part of the net that went in for a goal in the 13th minute.

Following a chance by the Nighthawks that was blocked and a rush whistled offsides on the Wolves, NNU was able to find a second goal roughly five minutes later. Off a free kick, the ball bounced around in the box before Ashley Parton was able to get a piece of it and get the shot just past Walton in the 18th minute for a 2-0 lead.

WOU nearly cut into the deficit before halftime with Matson getting a shot that was blocked and after Briana Kubli's chance was saved, Efraimson nearly scored in the 43rd minute. After a couple of nice lead passes broke Efraimson loose, she was able to shake past her defender and her shot deflected off the NNU player and then hit the crossbar. It nearly went in after hitting the bar, going directly down by the goal mouth before the Nighthawks were able to clear the chance away.

NNU took a 2-0 lead into halftime and the Wolves responded in the second half getting several chances. Just over a minute in, Nowatzke got a header chance in front that was saved by Montoya. A minute later, Nowatzke got loose for another chance that was again saved.

Following a save by Walton in the 51st minute, WOU had two more good chances a few minutes later. Parker and Pulliam each generated shots that were saved by Montoya.

Efraimson had a header shot get saved in the 62nd minute and after a shot by Smith was blocked, WOU found the crossbar again in the 66th minute. Nowatzke had a chance near the front of the goal that hit the top part of the crossbar and went out of play.

WOU didn't stop there, as Pulliam had two chances with one blocked and then another that went high.

NNU tried to extend the lead from roughly the 70-minute mark until the 78-minute mark, but Walton made a save in the 76th minute and a few more chances missed the net.

The Wolves made a couple more pushes down the stretch with a shot by King that went wide in the 81st minute and then one by Nowatzke in the 86th minute that also just went wide.

Madison Grande, Sanchez and Allison Wolf all had two shots to lead the Nighthawks. Parton added a goal on her only shot of the game. Montoya started in goal and played all 90 minutes, coming away with seven saves.

WOU will close their four-game homestand this Saturday when they host Central Washington starting at 2 p.m. at the WOU Soccer Field. Central Washington picked up the 3-2 road win at Saint Martin's earlier on Thursday.
