Shark Tank celeb to speak at SFA for public and entrepreneur students - KLTV

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - SFA’s Rusche College of Business is hosting Shark Tank celebrity and entrepreneur Damond John this week.

Students in the college’s newest entrepreneur and strategy degree program will be listening at the free public event.

Their professor Dr. Raymond Jones will interview entrepreneur John. He once heard the Shark Tank’s cast member speak and is confident listeners will be enlightened.

“Very engaging. Very energetic,” said Jones of the successful businessman.

John is called ‘the people’s shark’ stressing you don’t need money to make money.

A tough lesson to understand for a Bit Coin kind of generation. Jones teaches success doesn’t happen overnight but takes patience.

“Thinking about creativity and problem solving and really how to identify new opportunities whether they are starting their own business or working for another organization,” explained Jones.

And for his class, a self-developed business venture. They discover what doesn’t work.

“We started out with a lawn care service. And we decided very quickly that was not going to work out,” said Devon Ashcroft, an economics and finance major.

Most all the team members had after school jobs.

So, a business venture to fill a void on campus was selected.

“They recently took away the Great American Cookie on campus,” said Aubrie Smith, seeking a degree in the entrepreneur studies.

“Our business is called Sweet Jacks,” said human resources major William Douglas. “Basically, we’re making cookies and we’re going to sell them on campus.”

Smith is the baker, and her team members pitch in with marketing and distribution. The startup experience may help film student Elizabeth Trujillo fulfill a desire to one day own a studio.

“I find that’s a great opportunity to learn more on how I can do that.”

And Jones doesn’t expect any get rich quick ideas from Damond John, whose fashion brand has garnered product sales worldwide.

“He worked hard. And it’s all about hard work,” said Jones. “It’s all about your own drive and your motivation. And surrounding yourself with the right people.”

Which requires no money, but rather thoughtful choices.

John will serve as the guest speaker in the third installment of the Rusche College of Business Nelson Rusche Distinguished Lecture Series. The event is scheduled for 7:30 Thursday night in the Kennedy Auditorium at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The event is free. Reserved ticket holders have a place to sit. All others are on a first come, first serve basis.
