HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Portland State women's soccer team closed out its season on Sunday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Northern Arizona on a wet and windy day at Hillsboro Stadium.

Before the match, the Vikings honored Liz Hansen, Megan Cornett, Diana Santiago, Sofi Papastamos, and Natalia Blanco as their 2021 senior class.

"This senior class was special to us," said Head Coach Katie Burton. "They came in the same year we took over the program so we had no expectations. I could not have imagined at that time the impact that they would have on this program 4-5 years later. They put so much trust in us and what we were trying to accomplish. They set the foundation and standards for our future success and although they didn't get to reap those rewards I have no doubt the legacy that they have created will carry the rest of this group to a Championship. They will always be a piece of what we accomplish in the future. I am forever grateful to this group of seniors!"

Shots were hard to come by for both teams in the opening 45 minutes of the match. The first shot of the day didn't come until the 13th minute when NAU's Josie Novak netted the go-ahead goal.

With less than 13 minutes to play in the first half, Portland State found what they needed when Ani Jensen dropped a ball off her chest to the foot of Parker Reichner who nailed the equalizer. Holding off the Lumberjack attack for the remainder of the half, the Vikings headed into the break-tied 1-1.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Chloe Huling and Reichner both fired off shot attempts for the Vikings, but it was the Lumberjacks who found a goal in the 62nd minute. Following a foul in the box, Northern Arizona's Mikhail Johnson netted the go-ahead goal off a penalty kick to give NAU the lead.

Viking shots from Emma Jones and Tea Poore were unsuccessful in the closing minutes, giving NAU the 2-1 victory.

Portland State's defense held NAU to just nine shots in the contest. Chloe Huling led the Vikings with three shots on the day.

The Vikings finished conference play ranked eighth in the Big Sky (8 points), just missing a tournament berth. They finished the 2021 season 4-10-2 overall and 2-5-2 in conference action.
