For only the second time in twelve starts, Carlos Carrasco managed get through a scoreless first inning. The starter was impressive in the first and retired eight of his first nine batters before his struggles began.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Joc Peterson homered to deep right center to open the scoring. Orlando Arcia would follow with a double and Freddie Freeman would single him home to extend the Braves lead to 2-0.
Atlanta would continue to hit Carrasco hard over the next two innings, as a long William Contreras home run in the fourth would double up the score to 4-0, and the Braves would plate a fifth run in the bottom of the fifth on an Eddie Rosario RBI single.
The meaningless game seemed like it would descend into desultory garbage time at that point, but the Mets did manage to make a game of it. New York would get on the board in the top of the sixth, when Michael Conforto laced a single to center and Pete Alonso followed with an RBI double down the left field line.
The Braves would get that run back in the bottom of the frame against a returning Robert Gsellman, as the righty surrendered a run on a hit by pitch and a pair of singles in his first appearance since June 19.
After a quiet seventh inning, with one out in the eighth Francisco Lindor lofted a soft liner to left. Rosario tried to catch the sinking liner and missed, turning the probable single into a triple—the hit the 1,000th of Lindor’s impressive young career. Three pitches later, Michael Conforto would launch his 14th home run of the season—and first this season off of a left hander—deep down the right field line. The blast cut the score to 6-3, and, given the speculation surrounding his pending free agency and the emotion of his final home game, one couldn’t help wondering if it could be his final one in a Mets uniform.
It seemed that would be the memorable Mets moment of the ninth, but the team continued to rally in the ninth. James McCann would lead off with a double to right-center and come around to score on a Kevin Pillar RBI triple. With one out, Brandon Nimmo would single Pillar home to cut the lead to 6-5. Lindor came close to playing the hero, flying out deep to dead center for the second out. Conforto and Alonso would walk to load the bases, but Jonathan Villar would ground out to second as the rally would ultimately fall short.
