USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – A late comeback fell just short for the Air Force volleyball team this evening (Sept. 16), as it suffered a tough 3-1 loss to UC San Diego during the second day of competition at the Thin Air Challenge. After dropping the first two sets 22-25, 19-25, the Falcons rallied to win the third (25-23) and mounted several comebacks in the fourth before ultimately falling in a heartbreaking 31-29 thriller to the visiting Tritons.

Junior Joi Harvey led the Falcons with a career-high 16 kills on .433 hitting, while seniors BrookeLyn Messenger (15) and Sarah Markwardt (career-high 13) also tallied double-digit kills, as the trio accounted for 44 of the team's 68 strikes. Harvey also led the team in blocks (five – two solo, three assisted), while Messenger and junior Caroline Reinkensmeyer tied for the team lead with 12 digs. Sophomore Murphy Riggs (11) and Markwardt (career-high 10) also surpassed the double-digit dig tally, as Markwardt registered her first double-double. Junior Amber Soto registered her second 30-assist match of the season (31), while sophomore Ella Tschuor and junior Allie Griffith rounded out the team's stat leaders with one service ace apiece.

Air Force took an early 5-3 lead to start the match, with Harvey (kill, assisted block), sophomore Mac Russ (kill, assisted block) and junior Savannah Neal (two assisted blocks) combined for four of the squad's first five points. The Tritons responded with four straight, before kills from Harvey (two), Neal and Messenger put down kills to retake the lead at 9-8. Tschuor registered a pair of kills for an 11-10 Air Force advantage, while scores from Messenger (two kills) and Harvey (kill, assisted block) headlined a 5-0 run that put Air Force up by two (18-16). UCSD responded with their own five-point run to retake the lead (18-21) and, despite a kill from Messenger, won the opening set 25-22.

Markwardt earned the first point of the second set and teamed up with Harvey for a block, but the Tritons jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead and, despite a solo block and two kills from Harvey, maintained a seven-point advantage at the 14-7 mark. Air Force used three kills (Messenger, Markwardt, Tschuor), a block (Tschuor, freshman Alex Hatchett) and an ace (Griffith) to pull within two (12-14) during a 5-0 run. Air Force remained within two following scores from Markwardt (kill at 15-17), Harvey (kill at 16-18) and Messenger (block at 17-19, kill at 18-20), but UCSD scored five of the final six points for the 25-19 win.

The teams traded scoring runs in the opening minutes of the third set, including four-point swings by both Air Force (5-3) and UC San Diego (7-5), as well as six-point run by the Falcons (11-7) and another four-point stretch by the Tritons that tied the set at 11. Markwardt and Russ combined for three of the Falcons' next four points (one kill each, assisted block) as Air Force broke the tie to take a 15-11 lead. UCSD pulled within one three points later, but Markwardt stopped their run on the next play (16-14) and added another kill to maintain the two-point lead at the 17-15 mark. Back-to-back kills from Harvey pushed the Falcons' advantage to three (19-16), with Messenger (20-17), Harvey (21-18) and a UCSD serving error (22-19) keeping that margin for Air Force. The Tritons held Air Force at set-point for three points and pulled within one, but Markwardt put down the kill to secure the Falcons' 25-23 victory.

A kill and ace from Tschuor, as well as the first collegiate score for freshman Savanah Johnson, highlighted a 5-0 run that gave Air Force a 9-7 lead in the fourth. UCSD responded with a 7-1 run, before Harvey (kill), Messenger (block) and Johnson (kill) brought Air Force within one (13-14). Air Force stayed within one off a kill from Messenger at the 16-17 mark while back-to-back scores from Markwardt kept the Falcons within striking distance at 20-21. The Tritons reached match point at 24-21, but Markwardt put down a kill that sparked a 4-0 run by the Falcons – with back-to-back kills from Messenger – that gave the home squad a 25-24 lead. UCSD evened the score at 25 on the next play and the two teams traded the next six points, with Air Force earning set-point kills from Messenger (26-25), Markwardt (27-26) and Soto (28-27). The Tritons tallied back-to-back scores to go up 29-28 and, despite a set-tying kill at 29 from Tschuor, closed the set on a 4-1 run for the thrilling 31-29 victory.
