Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Trailing 2-0 in the fourth quarter, the La Salle field hockey team gained momentum on its 10th corner of the game to bring it back within one, but couldn't keep it going, ultimately falling to LIU 3-1 on the road Sunday afternoon.

The Explorers fall to 2-2 on the season while the Sharks pick up their first victory for a 1-3 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sofia Pla took the first shot at the cage for La Salle receiving the ball from Tatum Johnson at the top of the circle and immediately ripping off a shot that found the pads of the Sharks' goalie.
  • The Explorers earned their sixth corner in the second frame. This time Balduzzi awaited at the top of the circle to receive the ball from Johnson. The freshman immediately fired off a shot, but found the stick of a LIU defender to send the ball over the cage and out of play.
  • Back-to-back penalty corners for LIU with just under three minutes remaining in the second quarter put the Explorers' defense to the test. The Sharks took an immediate shot from the top finding the stick of Peyton Tollaksen for the block. A miscue in the circle awarded a second consecutive corner giving LIU its best look at the Explorers' cage, but Ryan Curley rose to the challenge for the save.
  • The 12th penalty corner of the game went the Sharks' way when a shot high and left found its way into the cage with just 48 seconds left in the second quarter put LIU up 1-0.
  • With just over seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Sharks extended their lead, 2-0, off their seventh corner attempt.
  • Corner attempt number 10 proved to be the lucky opportunity for the Explorers. Johnson inserted the ball up top to Paige Doyle who ripped the shot off toward the cage where Sol Espona waited for the deflection resulting in the first goal for La Salle in the 46th minute to cut the deficit to one, 2-1.
  • The Sharks earned a penalty corner of its own seconds later capitalizing on a give-and-go play in the circle to re-extend the lead by two, 3-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The teams totaled a combined 20 corners. La Salle went 1-12 while the Sharks went 3-8.
  • La Salle held the advantage in both shots, 12-9, and shots on goal, 9-6.
  • Pla led La Salle in shots with four while also placing a team-high three on goal.
  • Ryan Curley recorded all 60 minutes in the cage making three saves on nine shots faced.
