THROGGS NECK, NY – Trailing two-sets-to-none, the Maritime College volleyball team fought off five match points in the third set before taking the frame, 33-31, in its season opener against CCNY on Wednesday night.  The Privateers (0-1) also won the fourth set, but ultimately fell to the Beavers (2-0) by a 25-20, 25-15, 31-33, 20-25, 15-11 count at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

CCNY led the third set 23-20 before a Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) kill and back-to-back Kelly Kuhn (Lansdale, PA) service aces knotted the score at 23-23.  After the Beavers won the next point, Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) slammed a kill to pull Maritime even again.  A Kuhn kill tied it at 31-31, then Custodio gave the Privateers their fourth set point opportunity.  This one they were to put away, as Brooke Kirchner's (Lawrence, NY) kill finished off the set, 33-31, and extended the match.

The Privateers carried that momentum into the fourth set.  With CCNY leading 6-3, Kuhn ripped a kill to start a 4-0 rally that put Maritime in front, 7-6.  After the Beavers regained the lead, 10-9, the Privateers rattled off eight of the next nine points to build a 17-11 advantage.  Maritime took the frame, 25-20, to send the match into a fifth set.

However, in the fifth set, CCNY went on an early 6-0 run.  The Privateers got back within three at 8-5, but the Beavers responded with a 5-0 spurt to increase their cushion to 13-5.  Maritime saved a pair of match points before CCNY closed out the set, 15-11, to seal a 3-2 victory.

Custodio paced the Privateers with 19 kills on .317 hitting.  Mele finished with nine kills to go along with 20 digs, while Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) also notched 20 digs.  Carolina Bersani (Bronx, NY) contributed 19 digs, and Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) tallied 15 digs, seven kills and three aces.  Kirchner, meanwhile, posted 35 assists, eight digs and six kills.  Maritime hit .062 (48 kills, 37 errors, 178 attempts) as a team and outdug CCNY 87-78.

After CCNY scored the first three points of the match, the Privateers rallied to tie it at 4-4.  The first set was still even, 10-10, when the Beavers went on a 10-2 run to open up a 20-12 cushion.  Maritime eventually trimmed its deficit to four, 21-17, but CCNY earned a 25-20 set win to take the early lead in the match.

In the second set, the Beavers again used an early rally to pull ahead.  However, after CCNY jumped out to a 7-2 edge, Maritime responded with an 8-3 spurt to get within one, 10-9.  The Beavers ended the set on a 15-6 run, though, to win by a 25-15 margin.

There were 14 ties and seven lead changes in the third set, which saw Maritime jump out to a 5-2 advantage before CCNY countered with a 7-1 run.  The largest lead for either side in the stanza was three points, which happened a few times, including the Beavers' 23-20 cushion that sparked the Privateers' comeback effort.

Bianka Catral led the Beavers with 24 kills, and she also collected 15 digs.  Arianna Rivas recorded 11 kills and 20 digs, while Aubrey Jones had a double-double of her own with 45 assists and 14 digs.  Serena Warner registered seven blocks, as CCNY held a 12-2 edge in that category.  As a team, the Beavers hit .137 (53-28-182) in the match.

On Sunday, the Privateers (0-0 Skyline) open Skyline Conference play by hosting Yeshiva (0-3, 0-2 Skyline) at 11 a.m.  It will be Maritime's earliest Skyline match since 2004, when the Privateers also began their conference schedule on Sept. 11.
