ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dominated in every category except for the score in a 2-1 loss to No. 7 Penn State in its Big Ten Conference opener Friday evening (Sept. 16) in front of 800 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field.
U-M outshot the Nittany Lions, 23-3, including an 18-advantage in the second half, and outcornered them, 10-1.
Penn State (5-1, 1-0 Big Ten) scored its goals in the waning minutes of both the first and second quarters, breaking through on its first penalty corner of the contest with a tip-in from the right post at the 13:54 mark and, after U-M evened the score, netting the game-winning goal at 29:31 with a reverse chip from in front of the cage. All-American Sophia Gladieux scored the game-winner and assisted on the former.
Junior Lora Clarke scored U-M's lone goal midway through the second quarter, at 22:02, after carrying the ball in from midfield and burying a reverse shot near the top of the arc. It was her second of the season.
Fifth-year senior Anna Spieker posted one save -- on a point-blank shot in front of the cage in the second quarter -- while PSU goalkeeper Brie Barraco stopped 10 of 11 Wolverines shots on goal.
The Wolverines (3-3, 0-1 Big Ten) will host Cornell at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 10) at Ocker Field, live on B1G+. U-M will also host a neutral-site content between Cornell and Penn State at 3 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 17). Admission is free to both games.
