The scenery in a new short film that has already won awards might look a bit familiar, as it was filmed in Fairfield, Norwalk, Westport and New Canaan.
“Operation: Cavity” follows some children who collaborate to rob a dentist who traumatized their childhood.
“I had this desire to make a heist film,” said Alex Morsanutto, the writer and director of the film. “I was trying to figure out a way to incorporate this horror-esque idea of a child’s fear of the dentist. It’s something that has been living rent-free in my head for several years.”
A dentist’s office can be a terrifying place for a child, even scarier than nightmares, said Morsanutto, of Norwalk. He said he feared going as a child, and had a mouthful of cavities.
“I was constantly getting teeth pulled,” he said. “It was something I thought could be kind of cool and clever.”
“Operation: Cavity” was released online Sept. 7 on Omeleto and Film Shortage — two online streaming sites that feature short films. The film premiered at the Oscar-qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival. It also won best short film at the Durango Independent Film Festival, and the Myrtle Beach International Film Festival.
Morsanutto is the founder of Silvermine Productions, which produces films, commercials and TV shows. He has been in the business for a decade and founded the Norwalk Film Festival.
Morsanutto made another short film, “Hi-Glow Retro,” a few years ago, but said he was struggling to find backers for this new production. He had worked with a lot of tech startups and saw their success doing Kickstarter funding campaigns — so he decided to start one of his own.
It worked well, Morsanutto said, and he soon raised $18,000 from nearly 100 backers. He used that to assemble a cast and crew from Fairfield County and New York City. Most of the shooting was done in Norwalk and Fairfield, Morsanutto said.
“Fairfield Cosmetic Dentistry was our dentist’s office,” he said. “A great guy named Donald Miller runs it. He was actually a hand double as well. He let us use all his tools and gave us free reign of the space. The house location was in Silvermine, which is a little part of Norwalk.”
Morsanutto said people from the area that watch his film will recognize places in Norwalk, New Canaan, Westport and Fairfield.
While Hollywood actors get good press for learning to do their own stunts, Morsanutto said he thinks its notable that his actors, children from Norwalk and New York, had to learn to ride bikes.
“It was awesome. It was a great team effort,” he said, adding he would not have been able to make the film without the help of the cast, crew and his producers Meg Catalfamo, Paulo Araujo, Kara Bartek, and Chris Cenatiempo.
Morsanutto said he wants people to find “Operation: Cavity” entertaining.
“I want it to be a roller coaster ride that you come in on and have fun,” he said. “It’s an enjoyable watch. I want you to wince when you hear the drill sound and cringe when you see the tooth being pulled. I love all that.”
But at the end of the day, the story is about kids outsmarting adults. It’s a timeless theme harking back to “The Goonies” or “Stand by Me”, he said.
“That sense of adventure is what I was after,” he said.
