The short, memorable run of the Runner’s World Half Marathon | Lehigh Valley historical headlines - lehighvalleylive.com

There aren’t as many major foot races in the Lehigh Valley as there used to be.

For a while, it made sense that locally based Runner’s World should have its own race here. So the fleet-footed magazine started the Runner’s World Half Marathon & Festival in Bethlehem a decade ago this week.

“This is probably the best race experience I’ve ever had,” Heather Hawthorne, of Whitehall Township, told The Express-Times and lehighvalleylive.com for a story that ran in print on Oct. 22, 2012. “SteelStacks was an incredible background.”

The annual race would attract thousands who braved the city’s often-infuriating hills. Some would attempt the hat trick — completing the 5K, 10K and half marathon events in a single weekend.

Unfortunately, the Runner’s World Festival had a relatively short run. It folded after eight years. The publication instead put its name behind the St. Luke’s Via Marathon, another big fall event and Boston Marathon qualifier. But that race, too, was halted during the pandemic (though there have been reports of a potential comeback).

In the meantime, the D&L Half Marathon in November and St. Luke’s Half Marathon in the spring are still running.

20 YEARS AGO | Oct. 17, 2002: Beltway sniper fears. Sniper attacks in the Washington, D.C., area claim nine lives in two weeks, and concern reaches the Lehigh Valley. Local travelers say they are wary of driving capitol highways. … Oct. 18, 2002: Almost president. “I used to be the next president of the United States,” former Vice President Al Gore quips at Northampton Community College as he stumps for Democratic congressional candidate Ed O’Brien. Gore’s audience is receptive but O’Brien ultimately fails to unseat Lehigh Valley Republican Congressman Pat Toomey.

25 YEARS AGO | Oct. 21, 1997: Nazi-ing the problem. A Slate Belt man is surprised at complaints about the Nazi flag he flies from his mobile home along Route 611 in Lower Mount Bethel Township. He tells The Express-Times that he can fly a German flag if he wants. The newspaper reports: “When [he] was told that the current German flag is a black-, red- and yellow-striped tricolor, he said, ‘I didn’t know.’”

100 YEARS AGO | Oct. 17, 1922: “Bangor Bad Man” escapes. Joseph Anicola (aka the “Bangor Bad Man”), of Roseto, and another prisoner escape Northampton County Prison by sawing the window bars of their cell with a file, climbing out onto the roof and scampering down the water spout. Anicola has a history of escapes — The Easton Express calls him “Bangor’s Brindamour” after a vaudevillian escape artist popular at the time when the cellmates are recaptured a few days later.

This story is part of Lehigh Valley Then, a periodic series that recalls historical headlines from lehighvalleylive.com, The Express-Times and their predecessors from 10, 20, 25, 50 and 100 years ago. Stories are pulled from microfilm at the Easton and Bethlehem area public libraries.
