CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois volleyball pushed No. 5 Purdue to a fifth set after falling behind 2-0 in the match and would lead early in the final frame before ultimately dropping the Friday night meeting. Raina Terry would lead four Illini into double-digit kills with a season-best 24 on the night. The five-set thriller was the third for the Orange and Blue over the past five matches.

With their first loss in Big Ten play, the Illini now sit at 2-1 in the league and 7-6 overall while Purdue improved to 12-1 and 3-0. The Orange and Blue are the first conference squad to push the Boilermakers to five sets after Purdue swept No. 8 Minnesota and downed Iowa in four sets last weekend.

The Boilermakers jumped out to a 6-2 lead to start the match following a 6-0 run and that ultimately was the difference in a back-and-forth opening set win, 25-17. The Illini held Purdue to just .152 hitting in the first set posting four blocks.

Purdue struck first in the second set and would be the first to double digits as well, owning a 10-8 advantage. Neither side would string together a run longer than three points, with Purdue scoring three-straight just once to open up a 15-10 lead. Purdue battled back and forced an Illini timeout at 16-14 before eventually tying the match at 17-17. Illinois' lead had grown as large as seven at 12-5 ahead of the Boilermaker surge. A Kennedy Collins ace pushed the Orange and Blue's lead up to three at 22-19 and forced Purdue's second timeout but after back-to-back PU points, Illinois called for a stop as well. Out of the stoppage, UI tallied back-to-back points (24-21) before Purdue returned the favor to make it 24-23. On the next point, Kyla Swanson would find the floor for one of her five kills of the match for the 25-23 win. Illinois operated at a .286 hitting clip while adding three aces from the service line.

In Illinois' third five-set match in the squad's last five matches, the Illini opened up a quick 7-3 advantage. Illinois owned an 8-6 lead at the mid-set switch. Beginning at 8-8, the benches would knot the match at each point out to 14-14, when Purdue would strike for a 3-0 run to secure the 16-14 fifth-set victory.
