The hit social deduction game Among Us has caused a wave of animations and skits depicting some of the most iconic and relatable moments that occur when playing a round on the Skeld with friends, but one live-action short film's high production value and grade-A acting is the ultimate adaptation of the game. Every line and action in this latest and greatest Among Us short film hits the nail on the head and answers the question, "What if Among Us was real?"
New Among Us fan content has been popping up almost daily since the game skyrocketed in popularity in September of this year. Among Us was originally released in June of 2018 but failed to instantly draw the incredibly huge player base it has today. Thanks to the power of streaming, Among Us has reached a level of fame many developers (even in the AAA sector) dream of attaining. Unsurprisingly, a community of content creators has formed around the game, and a slew of animated short films and music videos have been produced over the past month and dominated social media apps alongside the countless memes created daily - but nothing has come quite close to the live-action adaptation that just dropped.
This live-action Among Us short comes from YouTube filmmaker duo Jay & Arya, who are well-known for their high-quality productions, and their 12-minute Among Us short film is no exception. Aside from the stunning camera work, gloomy space-age atmosphere, and believable acting; the short-film recreates some of Among Us's most iconic moments. The film frequently uses gamer lingo such as "sus" and "big brain" which were popularized by Among Us players. It also recreates some of the most relatable situations such as players monitoring each other doing tasks, the chaos that ensues when two players discover the same body, and calling back to previous rounds of voting.
This short film sheds new light on the actions players take when player rounds of Among Us. Sure, the indie game is a handful of pixels on a screen, and no one is really dying when they're ejected or stabbed in the back. But the film answers the question of what if the player's actions were real. It also gives a fictitious backstory to why there is an imposter in the first place and touches on the emotional repercussions of having to end the life of another crewmate.
Jay & Arya have done a phenomenal job recreating Among Us as a psychological thriller, and fans of the game need to watch it as soon as possible. It gives a glimpse at how easily Among Us could be adapted into a feature-length film or mini-series. After watching what a handful of creators can produce, the Among Us live-action short film begs an all-new question - when is the first feature-length Among Us movie coming?
Among Us is available now for iOS, Android, and PC.
