Auburn NFL roundup: Cam Newton’s Hail Mary just short - AL.com

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton passed for 365 yards on Sunday – the fifth-highest total of his 141 NFL games. But he needed 12 more yards in the Patriots’ 27-20 loss to the Houston Texans.

With New England trailing by seven in the fourth quarter, Newton drove the Patriots to the Houston 24-yard line. But incompletions on third and fourth down gave the football back to the Texans with 1:11 to play.

Houston was unable to run out the clock, giving the Patriots a long-shot opportunity from their 29-yard line with nine seconds to play. Newton completed a 9-yard pass to tight end Ryan Izzo, who got out of bounds with four seconds left, then uncorked a Hail Mary that Izzo caught 50 yards down the field. But that left New England 12 yards short of the end zone as time ran out.

The Patriots dropped to 4-6 in another game in which they came up just short. New England has its worst 10-game record since the 2000 season, when the Patriots were 2-8.

In their 35-30 loss to the Seahawks on Sept. 20, the Patriots trailed 28-17 entering fourth quarter. Taking their final possession with 1:42 left at the New England 19-yard line, the Patriots drove to the Seattle 1 in nine plays. But on the game’s final snap, Newton was tackled short of goal line.

In its 18-12 loss to the Denver Broncos on Oct. 18, New England trailed 18-3 entering the fourth quarter. Taking their final possession with 3:14 left at the New England 28-yard line, the Patriots drove to the Denver 24 in eight plays. But the drive stalled there. An incompletion, a sack by former Dothan High School star Malik Reed, a 6-yard completion and another incompletion gave the football back to the Broncos with 59 seconds to play.

In a 24-21 loss to Buffalo on Nov. 1, Newton lost a fumble at the Bills 13-yard line with 31 seconds to play.

“We had a lot of games just like it ended today,” Newton said after Sunday’s game, “and we’ve just been on the short end of the stick.”

Newton collected his yards on Sunday by completing 26-of-40 passes. Texans defensive end J.J. Watt batted away four of Newton’s passes.

“I think he’s been playing very consistently here for a while,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said of Newton, “so we have seen that from him for I think a number of games here, really since the San Francisco and the Buffalo games.”

With 8:14 left in the third quarter, Newton connected with wide receiver Damiere Byrd for a 42-yard touchdown pass as the Patriots cut Houston’s lead to 21-17.

“That’s the only reason why you do play is to win,” Newton said. “For us, we’ve just got to play better offensively, myself included. Accept challenges from where they come. Our defense did give us an opportunity at the end, holding them to a field goal. We’ve just got to keep, keep, keep thriving on becoming the best team that we can possible be.”

Newton was among the 16 former Auburn players who got on the field on the 11th Sunday of the NFL’s 101st season.

Three other former Auburn players were at the New England-Houston game:

· Byron Cowart started at defensive tackle for the Patriots. Cowart made four tackles, which equaled his single-game high first reached on Nov. 1 against Buffalo.

· Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones made five tackles on defense and one on special teams.

· Patriots quarterback Jarrett Stidham did not play.

In the other Sunday games:

Pittsburgh Steelers 27, Jacksonville Jaguars 3

· Daniel Thomas (Lee-Montgomery) started at strong safety for the Jaguars. Thomas intercepted a pass and broke up another pass. In his second NFL start, Thomas got the first interception of his career. Picking off a throw by Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the final play of the first half, Thomas had a 53-yard return. Thomas left the game early because of an arm injury.

Smith was not on the right side of Indianapolis’ line for the first time since joining the starting lineup in the fifth game of the 2018 season. Smith sustained a thumb injury during Thursday’s practice that required stitches, and he did not practice on Friday.

Kansas City Chiefs 35, Las Vegas Raiders 31

· Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson made his five kicks – a 35-yard field goal that gave Las Vegas a 17-14 lead with 4:36 left in the first half and four extra points.

Week 11 started with the Seattle Seahawks’ 28-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night.

Week 11 concludes on Monday when the Los Angeles Rams visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 7:15 p.m. CST. ESPN will televise the game.
