Jefferson finishes with 120 yards and three touchdowns
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State football team's comeback attempt came up just short Saturday evening, as the Beavers fell to Washington State 38-28 at Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Ore.
OSU trailed 31-14 early in the fourth quarter, but cut the advantage to three with under three minutes to play before surrendering a late touchdown.
Junior Jermar Jefferson had a monster day, rushing for 120 yards and three touchdowns, while adding five receptions for 50 yards. With the big game, Jefferson has now moved into ninth in Oregon State history with 2,185 career rushing yards.
Tristan Gebbia opened his season with 329 yards and a touchdown through the air. Trevon Bradford led the Beavers with seven catches for 79 yards and a touchdown, while Kolby Taylor went for seven receptions and 55 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Jaydon Grant recorded three tackles and an interception. Avery Roberts led Oregon State with seven tackles.
The Beavers finished the game with 451 yards of total offense, 329 through the air and 122 on the ground.
Jefferson scored touchdowns on back-to-back drives in the fourth quarter to get Oregon State back within striking distance at 31-28 with 2:38 on the clock. The junior running back also found pay-dirt in the third quarter.
Grant came up with a big first-quarter interception, picking the ball off in the end zone to limit the Cougars to seven first-quarter points. The Oregon State offense answered in the second quarter with an impressive 15-play, 93-yard drive capped off by a seven-yard touchdown pass from Gebbia to Bradford to level the score.
Washington State led 14-7 at halftime. Jefferson rushed for 73 yards in the opening 30 minutes.
The Beavers will hit the road next week for a matchup at Washington. That game will kick off at 8 p.m. Saturday evening.
