BETHLEHEM, Pa. --  Graduate student Dan Schaffer was ninth in the men's race and senior Emily Mackay finished 15th in the women's event, highlighting Binghamton's performance at the Lehigh Paul Short Run on Friday morning at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The Bearcat men were 13th out of 40 teams in the Gold Race while the women were 26th out of 37 teams in their Gold Race.

Widely considered one of the top meets in the East, the Lehigh Paul Short Run consists of over 6,000 high school and college runners competing in a combined total of 14 races. The Gold Race is the most competitive of the college-level races. There was also a Bronze Race at the meet.

Schaffer covered the 8,000-meter course in a time of 23:40. In the process, he recorded the second-highest finish by a Binghamton men's runner in the Paul Short Gold Race. Erik van Ingen was eighth (out of 387 runners) in 2010. There were 355 runners in the men's Gold Race that Schaffer competed in.

Junior Ryan Guerci was the Bearcat men's second finisher, placing 58th overall in a time of 24:25. Sophomore Josh Stone was 67th (24:30), followed by senior David Leff (25:11) and junior Matthew Cavaliere (25:13).

The 13th-place men's finish in the Gold Race is the third-best in program history. The 2010 team was 10th (out of 42 teams) while the 2009 squad was 11th (out of 42 teams).

North Carolina nipped Villanova 56-57 for the men's team title. The top individual finisher was Caleb Garnica of Utah State, who clocked a winning time of 23:29.

Mackay, meanwhile, covered the women's 6,000-meter course in a time of 20:35. In the process, she tied for the second-highest finish by a Bearcat runner in the women's Gold Race. Katie Radzik was 13th (out of 237 runners) in 2005 and 15th (out of 207 runners) in 2006). There were 328 runners, however, in Mackay's race on Friday.

Fellow senior Aziza Chigatayeva was 58th overall in a time of 21:13. Completing the team scoring for Binghamton were graduate student Elisabeth Van Tassell (186th, 22:36), sophomore Sheridan Talada (211th, 22:39) and junior Carolyn Burnell (273rd, 23:18).

Northern Arizona and Villanova tied for the team title with 85 points. First-place individual honors went to Taryn O'Neil of Northern Arizona, whose winning time was 19:54.

Up next for Binghamton is the Princeton Invitational on Oct. 16.

NOTES: Guerci's performance is the eighth-best by a Binghamton men's runner at the Lehigh Paul Short since the program first started coming to the meet in 2001 … Chigatayeva was 40th overall in the 2019 Gold Race … in 2018, Schaffer won the Bronze Race at the Lehigh Paul Short Run.
